It's always easier to make your enemies into the "other" and to decide that they're not worth treating with dignity and compassion. Subjecting them to torture is easy. Murdering them is easy. Hating them is easy.
It wouldn't be for you. If we had to torture them. If it was the only way to get answers. To keep everyone else safe. If we had to kill them. To keep everyone safe. That wouldn't be easy.
That's why you cannot do it. This sort of thing must be done by someone who finds it repugnant. You're not desensitized to it, no, but you're closer to that than some of the rest of us. If the act is limited to those of us who shrink from it, we can be certain it will never be overused.
